Help!! All of a sudden when I click on "Start" "Shut Down" a box pops up
which states
"Shut Down Windows" What do you want the computer to do? then little box
next to it which gives the following options: administrator; restart; shut
down; standby

All I want it to do is shut down or restart. I am the only person who uses
the computer.
Thanks for your help.

Windows has had that shutdown dialogue since Windows 95........Choose the
option you want.

What did you used to see when you did a shutdown? Perhaps you mean you used
to have the XP theme displayed which has slightly different displays of
telling you "WIndows is shutting down..." etc ?

XP also has the Classic Windows 9x theme, which looks more like Windows ME,
98, 95, 2000 and NT.
Perhaps you have that theme enabled.

If you want to change it back, do this in the Display Properties - right
click the desktop, go to Properties, Display, change it from the current
theme to the XP theme (the one with the "Bliss" background, the blue task
bar and green Start button).

Christine,

Has the look of your login screen recently changed? No more icons next to
user names you can click to log in? If someone changed that then that's the
problem. Put the login back to the way it was and the logout screen will
return to "normal".

1. Open the Control Panel
2. In it, open "User Accounts"
3. Click on "Change the Way Users Log On or Off"
4. Make sure "Use the Welcome Screen" is checked

By the way, this is not a class problem you solve with by attempting to
"repair" windows with a system restore, because Windows is not broken - this
is a configuration issue. As a rule you should never take drastic measures
like that to fix configuration problems.

best of luck,
Paul

You are having difficulties in posting because you are using the awful web
interface. Try using a newsreader instead. It is very easy to set up. Here
is an explanation and links to help you:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn
to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you
can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are some links to
information about newsgroups:
