i have one user who, when they do ctrl/alt/del the shut down option is greyed
out. Also if they select start to shut down that way there is only the
option to log out and not the option to shut down. Its on a laptop and only
affects one user, if anyone else logs on to this laptop then it is fine! any
suggestions

It might be a Group Policy restriction. Look in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

You might find something there... but I'm not sure exactly where or
under what subkey it might be.

PS. It's at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

DWORD: NoClose

Set the value to 0

thanks - the user is actually now on holiday and taken his laptop with him so
i'll give this a try when he gets back!
