Shut down log

Is there any way or any known software that will track and record what is
going on when we attempt to shut down. Am running a xp pro with 1 meg ram
and an 80 gig HD. Windows will not shut down. I have to shut the electricity
off. When I attempt to roll back I get a message saying the process did not
complete correctly. I would like to be able to see if I can determine where
the process of shuting down is hanging. I feel that it is probably a corupt
file or bad program but don't know where to start other that a log of
activity.
