shut down issue

I have a XP Home SP2 PC that is behaving oddly when I attempt to shut down,
restore, or stand by. When I click on the Start button and choose "Turn Off
Computer," the options screen that gives me the turn off, restart, and
standby choices takes several minutes to appear. Once it does appear, I can
choose any one of the three choices and it proceeds and performs the
requested task w/o delay or problem. What is causing the delay in this
option screen showing up? I've searched the web and I cannot find anything
that applies to this issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Shutdown delays are often caused by malware. First, make sure your
computer is 100% clean:

After you know the machine is virus/malware-free, if the problem
continues see this excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

Those pretty much just talk about the actual shut down process taking a long
time. For me, shutdown runs normally. It is just taking forever for the
options screen (turn off, restart, standby) to appear that is getting me
puzzled. Any other ideas??

And the malware status of the machine? Something is running.

I've scanned for virus/spyware/malware/etc. w/ numerous programs (AVG,
Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, Spybot, HiJackThis, and everything is coming up
clean. Not sure what else to look for. Nothing in the running process list
in Task Manager looks unusual. Thanks again for any insight.

Sorry, I don't have any more ideas for you. If you've gone through Jim
Eshelman's shutdown troubleshooter and the machine is clean, you're
going to need to do clean-boot troubleshooting. Look in Event Viewer
for clues. Something isn't exiting cleanly or is doing some work before
it does exit. Maybe it's your av or some other resident scanning sort
of program. Maybe it's printer software. Maybe it's backup software.
There just isn't any way for someone not looking at your computer to
know.

Good luck,

Malke

Try adding the Microsoft Add-on service "User Profile Hive Cleanup".
It helps in closing User Hive's at shutdown and may help ( a little ) with
your issue(s).

i'll give it a try and see what happens.
