shrinking a text box

I have several text boxes that are only sometimes used, depending on the
answer in a drop down box immediately before.
Example: medical history
first box (drop down) is patient denies any pertinent medical history, then
the second box (text box) would not be used.
first box is blank so information would have to be entered in the second box.
Is there a way to shrink the second box so it does not print a large gap
before the next entry?

This sounds like a form. I would not use a Word textbox for forms, but
rather a table cell. If you do that, and don't set a fixed cell height,
the cell will be only one line in height ...

This is a form to write soap notes. The first box is a drop down and the
second is a text box. The height is still the same no matter what I do.
However, some times I do not need to use the text box because the information
is in the first drop down box. Then it leaves a large gap before the next
drop down box because there must be a min. amount of space needed for a text
box whether it is use or not. I can shrink the drop down box if needed by
putting just a space for the first item in the drop down box. Should I use a
table cell for the same reason, just not for height? Please advise.

If you're using form fields, you should not be using text boxes anyway. Use
a table cell with height set to an "At least" measurement.
