Is there any way to get the file extension of the file through some
properties in XP, like it would in Win 98?

For instance, I have this video file and it just says "video file" and I
wanted to know if it's a .mpg, .mov., .avi, etc.

Control Panel > Folder Options > View and uncheck the box "Hide extensions
for known file types".

You can also review other settings while here and check/uncheck as needed.
