show/hide returns inside a text box

MS Word 2003
I have a document in which I am using text boxes. I have 3 lines of text;
first line <return> second line <return, return> third line.

The problem is when the "returns" are hidden it looks fine, when I "show"
returns Word gives me 3 returns between lines 2 and 3.

I've looked through the help, but I don't think I'm asking the right
questions.

Any suggestions??

Possibly one of the paragraph marks is formatted as Hidden?
