I want to show the left folder pane in explorer by
default. I know there is a quick easy way to set it up (I
did it just before my PC crashed - an unrelated event). I
remmeer it involves going into TOOLS/
Folder options / File Types, but from there I'm lost.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Hi Mcgiver,
I think you are looking for this..
menu select Folder Options > View >File and folders > check-box "Remember
each folder's view settings" is checked.

Edit the shortcut's "Target" to read;
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,E:\
Where E:\ is the drive or directory you wish to expand. Use the /e switch
for explorer view.
