THANK YOU both I followed the microsoft link and the directions were
perfect except the last step said I'd find a quick launch folder at the end
.... no folder but I did copy the shortcut into the folder where the quick
launch folder was supposed to be (inside System32 a few layers) t hen dragged
the icon onto the quicklaunch bar and voila! I have my desktop button
restored

thanks man. The microsoft solution looked long and boring so I just used
Kelly's script - scary but painless. I'll let you know if it takes over my pc!
