My computer works great. I have an external drive, printer,
card reader, Norton IS, Licensded Pest Patrol, Yahoo/SBC
Internet Connection, etc.
I never upgraded to SP1 but I did download all the service
updates prior to SP1. :P

My question is, I have the SP2 Disc that I got from Microsoft
and am wondering exactly other than USB 2.0 I need to take the
risk of something happening that I don't want to happen.

I do not have any viruses or adware on the computer and keep
it that way. 8)

Would you or wouldn't you upgrade/update to SP2? :?:

I forgot to mention that I am using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop
and I also use a SD card.

I wouldn’t, if every thing is working fine and you have taken
sufficant messurs to protect your computer (such as firewall, virus
scanner etc) then I wouldn’t bother.

You need to check on the Windows Update website for the information
regarding the SP2 update. There are specific steps that need to be taken
before running the update. If you are comfortable with the status of your
system, there is no need to update. However, there will come a time when
you won't be able to download further critical updates for your operating
system unless you have the update.

There are no guarantees that your system will not have problems with some
aspect of SP2. The information on the website will clue you in as to what
you need to be prepared to do. Good Luck.

Hi
I have also been putting off installing SP2 for the same reasons for
approximately one year but finally took the "plunge" today.
The installation was, surprisingly, completely successfull and without a
single problem. Obviously I can't say whether you will have the same result
or not. Just thought I would pass on my SP2 experience.
Good luck.

You are over 18 months behind installing critical updates
and your system is vulnerable to malicious code attacks.
You need to install SP2 immediately!

The only problems I'm aware of with SP2 have to do with the firewall
boot-time status and some non-MS network protocols and clients (such as
Netware), for which there are work-arounds, and some application
incompatibilities, which are fairly rare and software vedors worth their
salt have fixes/patches for them. I'd go ahead and do it. As with any
major change to the OS, back up your data, make sure the system is
malware and virus free first.

I would update. There are slight risks involved but even greater risks if you
dont. There is a lot more to sp2 than a firewall so dont think you are ok
becouse you are not. Most of the overexagerated problems were when sp2 first
came out and have now been patched.

Saying there are risks, without specifying what those risks are, isn't
worth spit.

SP2 is exactly the same today as it was in August 2004. Those same
overexaggerated (and unspecified) problems happen if I install today's
download. I can't patch it until after it is installed. And playing
the patch card is only valid if the string of patches has already come
to an end... has it?

All by yourself, you've convinced me to not update to SP2.

Fred is entitled to his views and opinions and they are certainly differant
to mine. I would however ask myself one question and that is would Microsoft
spend time and money developing and releasing sp2 then calling it a critical
update if it wasn't?

Come on Fred surely if the biggest software company in the world says a
update is important for security reasons then that is enough to pay attention.

As for "not being worth spit" becouse I dont spell out the risks-well the
info is on the net and Microsofts web site there is not the room to do it
here as it is as we all know a complicated matter-just check out
microsoft.com.

I dont know the facts and figures but I am confident that sp2 has "probably"
averted more problems than it has caused.

I agree with what Fred says about patching but lots of installations and
security software cause problems as well as solving them. My firewall can be
a real pain at times as it can sometimes stop me doing what I want to but I
certainly wouldnt turn it off-I configure it instead

Avoid sp2 at your peril

One cannot specify all the possible risks as they would vary greatly
between systems, applications used, protocols and clients installed. If
you have specific concerns perhaps it would be best to ask about them.

Once again, it depends on your specific systems and concerns. If you
research and test you will determine if you might face any risks, or
rather, challenges presented by SP2. Blindly swinging away at what you
call "unspecified" problems is not productive; you're shooting
rubber-bands at ghosts. Until you identify _your_ particular SP2
concerns and reseach them you will never know.
All by yourself, you've convinced me to not update to SP2.

No, you've convinced yourself. Again, without proper investigation about
specific concerns and actually _testing_ SP2 in your environment you are
making a decision based upon conjecture and speculation.

Fred: Why do you ask for advice if you have made up your mind
already?

I say that you would be extremely foolish IF you didn't install
the SP2 upgrade.

Google SP2 and read the facts. Go to Microsoft...read the facts.

Stick your head in the sand if you must but you will regret your
error in this regard.
