I noticed on Windows Update there is a package called "Microsoft .NET
Framework". I don't know what it does and whether I need it? I am
user, not a developer.

What are the benefits of installing this package?

Are there any downsides?

Thanks,
Sam

Until you need to run an app that requires it, it's not critical that
you install it.

If you don't need it, and obviously you don't or you'd know it, it is of no
value to you whatsoever.

Thanks. That's what I suspected.

But now you got me curious... What kind of applications need it? What
is it good for?

Sam

What apps need the .net framework? The obvious answer is applications
developed using .net. It is sorta like a runtime environment. Did you ever
download/run a Visual Basic program that required the Visual Basic runtime
libraries? It's that sorta thing. It's needed by applications developed
using C++ .net or Visual Basic .net among others.
