Shorting out ide channel

i recently had a power outage in my apt. , my power supply was shot
but my board seemed to be ok. The problem i am having is that when i
plug in any devices into my ide channels my machine will not boot, but
if unplug the ide cables from the board the machine will post. is it
possible to fry ide cables???? or are my channels just shot????

Fry ide cables? No. Short of a lightning strike, there's not enough
current.

Try checking the connector - if you missed the first two pins, you'll
get symptoms like you're describing.

Otherwise, run down to radio shack and get that multimeter! :)

Reversed IDE cables on one end will also give those symptoms.
