Shortcut key for centering Text

Hi,
I'm a longtime Lotus 123, Word and Powerpoint user finally being forced to
Excel.

One of the very first things I tried to do in Excel was to center some text
in a cell with a shortcut key. In every Microsoft application I've ever
used(I think), I've been able to left align with (ctrl l), right align with
(ctrl r) and center with (ctrl e). This works in Word and Powerpoint etc
etc.

But I can't get it to work in Excel. Surely there is a simple shortcut key
to center text in excel, isn't there. I mean, this is such a basic thing.
I don't want to have to grab my mouse to do it either, unless I absolutely
have to.

The other thing I'd like to know is what are the shortcut keys for putting
different borders on cells?.... ie if I want a the left side of a cell to
have a line and I don't want to use my mouse to click through all the border
options. In lotus I would just do a Shift Colon fll, and I would have it.
Simple and fast and no mouse. Are there border shortcut keys in excel??

Thanks

To my knowledge there is none, the long way is

Ctrl + 1, A, Alt-H, then C and Enter twice

You could always do that and record a macro and use a shortcut for the macro

FWIW, in MacXLv.X, CMD-e centers the text, as did XL2001. And of
course, all shortcut keys are editable.

I didn't know Ctrl+1 - many thanks. I always use(d) Alt-O. Enter to access
the format menu (and then keys as you showed), so that is 1 keystroke saved.
Thanks again

David
