Shortcut Key for Autofill?

P

Peter Bernadyne

Hello,

I was just curious if there was a built-in keyboard shortcut (lik
Ctrl+C for Copy, Ctrl+V for paste, etc.) for the autofill function. M
Excel help file doesn't seem to mention this, but I could have swor
I've seen it used before.

If not, what's the best way to assign the autofill function to
keyboard shortcut? I could write my own macro and assign a shortcu
key, but I can't help feeling that that would be more inefficient tha
using Excel's own autofill.

Thanks,

-Pet

hi,
I know of no such built in function. what you may have
seen is a short cut key assign to a macro that autofills
and without seeing your data, it would be difficult to
write a sample for you.(selecting the range to autofill is
the problem). do a recorded macro that auto fills like you
want then asign it to a custom icon on the tool bar. how?
Right click the tool bar. click customize. when the
customize dialog box come up....
click the command tab. click Macro from the list on the
left. drag the custom macro icon to the tool bar.
then assing your macro to it. how?
Right click the tool bar then click customize. when the
customize dialog box come up....click the command tab.
Click the custom icon on the tool bar. in the dialog box
click modify selection > assing macro.

Thank you both for your replies.

To Mr. McRitchie:

I actually searched your previous posts and I found the Ctrl+D befor
posting, but this doesn't seem to work on my version of Excel (2002).
For instance, I have a couple of columns as follows:

Col1 Col2
a 5
b
c
d

Let's say I want to autofill in Col2 with 5 down through 'd' in Col1.
I highlight the cell where '5' appears and I press Ctrl+D. Nothin
happens. Alternatively, if I press Ctrl+R, my '5' becomes 'a', th
value of the cell to its left (which makes sense, I guess).

To autofill using the mouse, I would highlight the cell with '5' in i
and then click the + sign (which is what I'm trying to replicate usin
shortcuts). Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong here or is it perhap
just my version of Excel?

Thanks,

-Pete

Wait...I think I got it. If I highlight my original range (a-d, alon
with '5'), and press Ctrl+D it works.

Is there anyway of doing this so that I could just use the cell wit
'5' in it alone?

Thanks,

Hi David,

Actually, yes, I'm trying to bypass using the mouse.

I reckon there's no easy way, is there?

Thanks for your help, though.

Hi Peter,
Well I guess I'm the wrong person for that, I use mouse with right hand
plus left hand shortcuts. So left hand stays on keyboard (am right handed).

Always wonder how people making a selection from the keyboard really save
time. As a programmer speed never counted just as long as it wasn't hunt
and peck.

You might have to make a macro, you soon would run out of the few shortcuts
available and any resemblance to so a letter that makes sense.
