Hi,
If there's a better ng for this, please advise. My question
feels like it fits here, so I'll start here.
XP Pro, SP2, 2.7 GHz, 256M RAM, two 80 Gig drives, no Critical
Updates missed, Norton Sys Works, Partition Magic 8,
anti-spywares, clean system, as best as I can tell.
Problem: Wind Doctor reports a bad link to PM's Rescue disk
Label.pif when it tries to get an icon from shell32.dll. Unable
to fix automatically, allows attempt at manual fix.
Error messages:
# 1603 Unable to locate E:/[partition magic long
name]/...partitionmagic.msi. The msi file IS there.
I think it also says something about no valid source. It allows
for a Retry.

I reinstalled both Symantec products: PM and Sysworks:
I get past the above now, but, after two more installs and a
Repair, now I'm consistantly getting, with Windoctor:
.../label.pif ICON problem in Shell32.dll ... cannot continue.
The path to shell32 IS correct, and it IS there.
SO WHY DO I THINK IT'S POSSIBLY A MS PROBLEM?
Because it says the icon in shell32 is corrupted or (forgot the
or words)
and,
I do recall a few days ago I was cutomizing some icons for
various folders on my desktop, and one, which I cannot remember
for the life of me, was NOT the icon I chose, even after doing a
Restart. I finally had to choose another icon to use because I
kept getting the wrong one. With a little effort, I could go and
find it again if it's really necessary. That would appear to be
a shell32.dll problem to me.
I'm mildly concerned as to why PM8 would use a shell32 icon
because it seems to have all its own icons in its files, I
looked. There is no icon ID of course, so I can't tell what it's
specifically looking for.
I grabbed the shell32.dll from i386 (SP2 folder) and copied it
into the system32 folder, replacing the one that was there. At
the same time I did a crc32 and Hash crc's (2 diff progs) on both
of the shell32's (one renamed, of course), and they were
identical, so I wasted my time with the rename/copy of shell32.
And now, today, I come across this shell32 problem in addition
to the above.
Everything if functioning fine, so I'm not havine operational
problems, but --- shell32 problem might indicate something
waiting to spring, so I thought I'd see if I could find out
what's up.
Any experience, corrective action, esplanation, familiarity with
similar problem, or knowledge of what I've described in the
shell32 icons for SP2 would be most appreciated.
