I have just upgraded from ME which had Defrag, Disk Cleanup, and Tune Up as
scheduled tasks. How should these be setup with XP? The Add Scheduled Tasks
does not list them.

ps. I have the system configured as a single user and have not activated the
Administrator Account.

You schedule by typing a command line. It's easist to schedule anything and then edit the resulting job with the programs you want.

So add a new task and choose any program. Finish the wizard, right click the new job - Properties and replace the program with

cleanmgr /sagerun:1

Repeat above steps and replace with Defrag c:

The first is Disk Cleanup and the second is Defrag for scheduling (different to the manual defragger).

You don't need to run chkdsk - it will run if needed by itself.

Before running diskcleanup the first time you need to type in Start - Run
cleanmgr /sageset:1
and set the options it will use when run in scheduler.

You need to enter an admin account name and the account chosen to run these tasks needs to have a password. Else it will refuse to run them. Assign a password to your admin account and use that in TS. You don't need to logon in the account used to run the tasks. If you run them in a different account you won't see the programs run, but they'll be running.

Tuneup is not an application, under XP. XP uses a similar technology called
pre-fetch to optimize the programs you use most frequently. Degfrag
(outside of Disk Properties) is a command line utility DEFRAG.EXE You can
download a small utility here that will let you setup Defrag to run on all
fixed disks, as a Scheduled Task.
