shdocvw.dll "bad image - explorer.exe" error

Hi, I recently ran an XP pro upgrade on a HP Pavilion 6642F pc. It ran fine.
I had copied the ms04-011.exe patch to a cd so that I could load this patch
on the XP box once the load was complete. I did so, and after the ms04-011
patch I received the following error at bootup:

Title: bad image - explorer.exe .. the message was something like the file
shdocvw.dll was invalid for the image. Check the image and try again.

I tried deleting this dll. Renaming the .old dll file to the current name.
Nothing worked. Tried booting into safe mode, same error. Eventually
re-loaded the pc again.

From there, I went to windows update on the net and tried to update the pc
using windows update. Of course, once WU finished, the get the same
shdocvw.dll file error all over again. Again, safe mode gives me the same
error. All I can do is run task manager and restart the system.. anything I
try to run from the command line fails.

I did try to run the sfc command... it went thru the process of scanning but
after the scan and a reboot the error is still the same.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

In addition, I have searched on microsoft.com, technet, and the support site
for shdocvw.dll fixes... none of what I have seen has fixed my problem. Some
of the suggestions actually require a gui screen where I can get to a start
menu. In my situation, I cannot get to a start menu. Once the shdocvw.dll
error pops up, I can click OK but I never get any taskbar.. start menu.. etc.

Problem is fixed. Reloaded XP again (remember, this was an upgrade from 98 SE).
Immediately run adaware.
Then load patches for XP.

After this, I did not have the shdocvw.dll errors. Even though the system
was not on the net, some spam carried over from the 98 SE setup evidently??
