sharing xp files with win98 computers

I have tried and failed every effort to get my WIN98
laptop to access a share I have set up on my WINXP
Professional machine. It can see the share, but when
attempting to open it I get the error
message "//computername/share is not accessible. Not
enough memory is availabe. Quit some programs."

I am able to view contents of other shares on another
system which is running XP Home. I have set up duplicate
user accounts on both machines and they are in the same
workgroup.

Any suggestions?

I have a same issue when I tried to connect a XP pro machine and a Win98 2nd
machine. The XP pro machine can see the share folder on the Win98 machine,
but the Win98 machine can not see the share folder on the XP pro one. I
still did not have a solution.

Robert,

what error message do you get? Please see

check.

Hey Martin,
I was about to reformat when I finally removed "file
and printer sharing" from the network properties field.
Then I reinstalled it, all without rebooting, and it
worked, I couldn't believe it!! I was working on this same
problem for days! All this firewall, netbios/tcp/ip stuff,
never made a difference. Whew!! Guess you just have to try
the worst case thing before you reformat?
Good luck,
Al Sholtis/ (e-mail address removed)

If your WinXP is configured as NTFS then Win98 with FAT32 can't see it.
NTFS can see FAT32 but not the other way around.

That is not true. The file system is transparent to the network.

Access to NTFS is always subject to access rights though.
