I have a home network consisting of my PC (Windows XP Pro/P4/Crossover
Cables/NIC to Kids PC also running XP Pro). My computer is the gateway to
internet using DSL.
I just upgraded my DSL speed by running dos commands as per my ISP support.
After restarting, my speed increased dramatically!
Now my kids pc comes up with the following problem -
"Limited or No Connectivity" "You might not be able to access the internet
or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not
assign a network IP address to the computer."

This never happened until I changed to DSL speed! Now my ISP tells me that
they are NOT responsible for networking issues. Just the gateway PC.
What the hell happened??????
I am sure I am missing something.

many thanks in advance-my kids are ready to kill me!

and other thing - I have tried Repairing, deleting NIC card driver, updating
driver and reinstalling. Still get the same "Limited or No Connectivity"!
Please help-Frustrated Dad

Jack,

Why not tell use what those DOS commands were, if we knew what was changed it
would be a lot easier to suggest a solution.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

Here you go Chuck...Hope this is correct. My computer & Kids Computer

Jack,

Well, some details I'm guessing at because you haven't provided a lot yet. You
used to have Internet Connection Sharing, but now you don't. Whatever the
changes were that you made, based upon the advice from your ISP, made ICS stop.

Both LAN connections (My Computer/Local Area Connection, and kidscomputer) are
169.254.0.0/16, which is APIPA.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=220874

IOW, neither computer is getting DHCP addresses, because ICS isn't running.

Did you make the changes based upon a letter or something from the ISP? Or over
the phone?

Try rerunning the network setup wizard, and re selecting "This computer connects
directly to the Internet. The other computers on my network connect to the
Internet through this computer." See if that changes anything.

Under Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services, look at Windows Firewall
/ Internet Connection Sharing, and make sure it's Started and Automatic.

Of course, whatever the changes were that your ISP suggested may be reversed.
It would sure be good to know just what they had you change.

I gotta wonder too why My Computer/Local Area Connection shows Media State :
"Media disconnected".

YO Chuck,

Rerunning the wizard did the trick! yeah baby! =)
You have made me famous around my home once again.
Thanks you much for your patience and help.

Alright, Jack! That's great news. What about your internet access now? Is it
still fast like it was after the ISP upgrade or whatever?

DSL is Fast as ever! =)
Many thanks again. Your a big asset for this newsgroup.
I am sure we will cross paths here again.
My kids are always messing with the settings.
They keep me busy.

best,

jack
