sharing folders on XP Home network

I have an XP Home network that currently shares the "shared folders" ok for 4
computers on the network. I just added a 5th computer. It recognizes the
network (ie the other computers and shared folders show up in "my network
places") but when I try to access them I get an error message that says they
are not accessible:
"You might not have permission . . ." and "Not enough server stoarge is
available to process the command."

Sharing works the other way -- ie I can access the shared folder on the new
machine from my other machines.

Any idea what's wrong? Is there a setting I'm missing? And I have no idea
what that server storage thing is about.

Thanks in advance,
David

This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug.

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to,
not the machine where you see the error message.

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix :
You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ).
Perform the following steps:

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize
(or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it of
type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it.

There's a KB article about this, too.

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 (Q177078)

It worked!! AMAZING, thanks for the great answer.

The parameter was set to 11. When I changed it to 15 the new computer had
access.

By the way, as a possible cause, I've been running Norton System Works for
many years, but about a year ago I turned off the anti-virus component and
switched to AVG Free Edition. So I'm not sure when the parameter change
occurred. I'm also not sure that the new machine was the only one able to
access my desktop -- I didn't check the others today -- or, if so, why it
only affected that machine.

But hey, it works: that's all that matters.

David.
