SharedAccess service is missing

G

Guest

After installing Windows XP SP2 I tried to set up the firewall and failed. It
seems that my SharedAccess service is not running and I can't start it. It is
not installed.
How do I install the sharedaccess service?
Why is it missing from my SP2 package?
Thanks for your help,
Omer

Hi Wesley and thank you for your quick reply.
I am a bit confused. The Windows Firewall is downloaded with Windows XP SP2.
If you cannot start it in SP2 then where can you start it?

I do not have SP2 I have SP1.

You asked about the SharedAccess service and the link that I gave you
explains about how to fix problems with the SharedAccess service so you can
start the Windows Firewall service.

Hi Wesley,
I apologize. Somehow did not notice the link.
However, the link describes the case where the sharedaccess service is not
running and needs to be tweaked in order to to start.
In my case, I can't start the service because it is not even installed.
The sc query command shows:
C:\>sc query sharedaccess
[SC] EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
C:\>
How is it possible that the SharedAccess service (also referred to as ICS
service) is not installed? any ideas?
Thanks again for your help,

Omer,

I have SP1 so I cannot test for SP2 myself.

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is the name that you
should see in Services if you have SP2. That is the Display Name, the real
Service name is SharedAccess, however the SharedAccess name is not listed in
Services. More about that below.

Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is
what SharedAccess was called in SP1.

In XP SP1 you did it in Services, but apparently you do it this way with
SP2...

When you follow these steps do you get an error message?

How to re-enable the SharedAccess service
Windows XP Service Pack 2
If you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and are using the Windows
Firewall, the operating system will alert you when the SharedAccess service
is stopped, by displaying an alert balloon saying that your Firewall status
is unknown. Perform the following steps to ensure that the Windows Firewall
is re-enabled:
1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Security Center.
3. Ensure that the Firewall security essential is marked ON.

Note: If the Firewall security essential is marked on, your Windows Firewall
is on and you do not need to continue with these steps.

If the Firewall security essential is not marked on, click the
"Recommendations" button.

4. Under "Recommendations," click Enable Now. A window appears telling you
that the Windows Firewall was successfully turned on.
5. Click Close, and then click OK.
6. Close the Security Center.

If you get an error message what does it say?
-----

Do you see Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Services?

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down and look

If you see Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), double click
it and on the General tab it will show both the Service Name and the Display
Name.

Do you have this key in your registry?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess

Ignore this one if any of the above worked.

When you follow these steps do you get an error message?
Enable Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2
1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click On (recommended), and then click OK.

If you get an error message what does it say?

ipnathlp.dll appears to be the file.

The Service name is what is listed in the registry and what you have to use
for sc.exe commands for any service. The Display name is how any service is
listed in Services.msc.

Hi again Wesley,

Here is what I get for wach one of your suggested activities:

Activity #1:
--------------
enable firewall: control-panel>security-center ==> firewall is OFF
tried to enable through recommendations and got an error:
"We're sorry. The security center could not turn on Windoes filrewall. To
try turning on the firewall yourself go to Windows firewall in Control Panel.
In the Windows firewall dialog general tab select on (recommended) and then
click OK."

When I try to do as suggested in the above message, after double clicking on
Windows Firewall in the control panel I get an error:

"due to and unidentified problem. windows cannot display windows firewall
settings"

By the way, doing contro-panel>firewall is the same as entering:
run>firewall.cpl, so I get the same above error either way.

Activity #2:
--------------
I looked for the service in the services listing under the full display name
and under sharedaccess. The service is not there. In fact I checked ALL the
listed services and could not find it.

Activity # 3:
---------------
Chcked the registry and I DO in fact have the entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess

The description is as you said, the dependency process are started (netwrk
connections and windows management). However, I noticed there is not
"imagePath" entry at all.

To summarize:
1. can't enable the firewall.
2. can't start via firewall.cpl
3. the service is totally missing
4. the entry exists in the registry but seems to be missing some fields.
So... so far no luck.

Thanks for all your help so far,
Omer S.

Hi Omer,

I have just a couple things to try.

Try to unregister and then register ipnathlp.dll.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box:

regsvr32 /u ipnathlp.dll

Hit your Enter key.

You should see a message telling if it unregistered or not.

Start | Run | Paste this in the box:

regsvr32 ipnathlp.dll

Hit your Enter key.

You should see a message telling if it registered or not.

You may have to reboot, I do not know.

Hi again Wesley,
I have tried just about everything you had suggested. The sharedaccess
service settings were messed up on all 3 controlsets. I tried installing the
inf file as well and no luck.
At the end, I took a frirnd's advice and simply copied the registry settings
of the Sharedaccess service from another XP computer by exporting and later
importing into mine. This worked wonderfully. I rebooted and the service
started working and hasn't stopped since. With the service operating the
Windows Firewall is active as well and all seems to work just fine.
I guess for some reason the settings for the Sharedaccess service got messed
up in my registry and there doesn't seem to be a simple way of restoring them
to the default, short of copying from another computer.
Thanks for all your help,
Omer S.
