Shared voice and fax line

I have recently had broadband installed and now everytime
someone calls me on the telephone, my fax console kicks
in as well (if I'm on line of course) so I don't know
whether it is a phone call or a fax trying to get through!

Can I stop this happening or do I have to suffer in ring
tones?
