Shared files not visible

Who can help with my file-sharing problem??

I have two Windows XP Pro PCs (both with all latest updates) networked -
sometimes they're connected wirelessly (802.11b) and sometimes by 100Mb/s
cable.
The problem exists no matter how the two PCs are connected though.

One PC is connected to the internet via an ADSL USB modem and shares this
with ICS to the other PC. This all works fine - the PC with the modem gets
the IP address 192.168.0.1 and the other PC gets assigned various addresses
within the 192.168.0 ??? range.

File-sharing works fine for the PC with the modem - no problems there.

But on the other PC file-sharing isn't working correctly.
The problem is that not all files are visible.
I have shared various folder from the PC that is connected to the modem and
very often not all the files within a shared folder are visible to the other
PC.

I have Simple File Sharing enabled on both PCs.
On both PCs i have set the same password for both PCs' Guest accounts - when
prompted we enter the password and it's accepted.
Windows Firewall is OFF on both PCs, the only firewall running on the
network is Outpost Firewall which runs on the modem connected PC - i'm sure
that Outpost is correctly configured.
I have run the Network Setup Wizard on both PCs and disabled File and
Printer Sharing, then re-booted both PCs and run the Network Setup Wizard
again on both PCs to re-enable File and Printer Sharing (also had to set the
Guest accounts' passwords again after this).
Endless re-boots and Repair Connections have failed to help.

Does anyone recognise this problem and know a fix?

Any further details required please post in this thread and i'll supply
them.

Thanks.

Martin.

Martin,

Inconsistent access / visibility of shared data (extending to the file level
even) is a rights problem, and is most frequently caused by application of one
specific security update.

Thanks for the reply.

I've downloaded and installed MS Update KB896427-v3 on both PCs now and
first results seem ok - but i'll wait a while before i declare the problem
to be 100% fixed!

Martin.

OK, Martin. Please do let us know how it works out for you. Microsoft

become known to them, so keep us updated!
