Shared drives do not properly function as before... Missing files.

I have a homenetwork, all with WIN-XP_PRO.

I share 2 large drives globally on the network, just using rightclcik and
making it shared from the root downwards.

All other computers see the dhsed drive, that's no problem.
BUT: In the maps of the shared drives every lately updated 'client' machine
does not see all files in all maps anymore. They seem not to be there
anymore, BUT THEY REALLY ARE ON THE SHARED COMPUTER ITSELF !!!

One computer is not updated for a time. This 'client' DOES SEE ALL
MAPS,SUBMAPS and files in it. The other computers don't. In specific maps
specific files seemed to be gone (but they aren't).

I shared it over and over again. Even reformatted the drives with NTFS,
placing data on it and shared it again and again.

So it's no rights problem, not an ACL problem. I use simple file and printer
sharing and always worked fine. Now randomly missing files in maps on the
'clients' that use the shared drives.

One 'client' is working fine however, it sees the whole shared rives, all
maps on it and all files in all maps. But this one hasn't been updated woith
auto-update for some time !!

Anybody suggestions ???

A BUG ???

Looks like it. Normally if the computers see each other over the network,
all is working fine (all exept the problem mentioned) , so it's definitely
not a network problem. It looks like a BUG in one of Microsoft latest
auto-updates....

Please help, never seen this kind of problem before.
One client sees all that's shared, but as mentioned wasn't updated for a
period of time. I'm almost sure if I let it install the updates that are in
wait, the problem would also be on that computer too.

Help, Help, Help

Antoine,

Your report that one client, that "hasn't been updated woith auto-update for
some time" is working fine, rings a bell.

Search for "KB885250" here:
<http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web>

I thought that problem was fixed by Microsoft a while back. Are the problem
computers completely updated?

The computer that works hasn;t been updates this year at all !!!

So the KB885250 isn't on it !!! THAT'S PROBABLY WHY IT WORKS.

Is Microsoft really SO STUPID, that they LEAVE A SERIOUS BUG for as long as
the release of the KB885250 ????

All other compters are updated correctly as far as I know.

In my testing I even went so far as reinstalling WIN-XP+SP2 again with 21
updates or so. But this was on the SHARING COMPUETER and I think the problem
is related to the client site of microsoft netyworking.

What should I do ??

It's almost practitable impossible that ALL my other 5 computers would have
missed a fix or update. I have it switched on long before KB885250 was
released.

Should I simply remove KB885250 ??

How can I do this in a clean way ??
I won't want to disrupt the auto-update proces.
So what I mean is, that i'm able to get the KB885250 back in case it is not
the problem (probably is , but you never know...)

I can't call microsoft because you'll have to pay big $$$$ for asking them
to solve a problem. The call it PAY per Incident, This is PAY per BUG !!!

AGAIN TO MICROSOFT: REALLY STUPID !!!!!!!

Please tell me what to do now.

The machine that's working is not updated this year, but has service pack 2
running. I just use it as my printers server, so pay not too many attention
to it as long as it works. There is no Internetting on that machine and
Norton is installed.

Now I'm scared to update it.

Any answers would be nice.

Thx in advance......

Antoine,

You just asked a lot of questions that have mostly been asked before, but not
answered. If you Google, using the link I provided, you will find a few of the
previous questions (and this discussion, which is now recorded for posterity).

Most of the previous folks asking your questions about the fix reported just un
installing it using Add / Remove Programs, and that would be it. Has a new fix
been issued? I don't think so.

Try removing it from just one of the problem computers, and see if that solves
your problem on that computer.

If you remove it, the removal is successful and fruitful, and you don't want it
re installed, you might want to do a manual install for a couple month cycles,
to ensure that it doesn't install again. I don't use auto-update, so I can't
really advise you there.

But please do let us know here if un installing it works for you. This is a
peer help forum, and what you report may help others.

Dear Chuck, I'm not in love with you, BUT YOURE MY SAVIOUR !!

I simply removed the KB885250 from one of the problem client computers.
Windows as always (pay attention MICROSOFT !!!) made a hell of a problem
when removing it. It gave me a list of 30 ore more apllications that wouldn't
work anymore POSSIBLY (yes MICROSOFT, these are really nice and usefull
messages!).

But I didn't let me scare of, so I just said REMOVE --> OK, dispite the
scary warnings.....

Then it was rebooting and then........

ALL WAS WORKING AS IT SHOULD BE !!!

(ps: as far as I tried it, but i have confidence it works now !!)

SO THE KB885250 CAUSES THESE SHARING PROBLEMS ON THE CLIENT SIDE.
(........... here I was saying something not so nice to MICROSFT
:)...........)

YEP Guys, Microsoft JUST RELEASES UPDATES THAT MESSES UP YOURE WINDOWS-XP
NETWORKING, SO BE AWARE AND WARNED !!!
THEY DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO FIX IT................
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS YOU CAN PAY THEM BY INCIDENT SO EVERY BUG MICROSFT
RELEASES IN ITS UPDATES MAKES YOU COST $$$

Strange, why is that man Gates or something so rich ????.

These kind of practices should be sued...... It is America, isn't it.

So many thanks to you Chunk, the problem seemed solved.

I really did'n't think Microsoft was such a unreliable Institute......
But it's clear to me now it is...

One would even disable automatic updating to prevent Microsoft from messing
up youre computer !!

Again many thanks, Chuck....

Antoine,

Well, there is but one Saviour, but thanks for the feedback.

I'm like you, I am astounded at how long this open issue has been known, and not
resolved. Just please be aware of what the patch itself is supposed to protect
you against, and try and minimise your exposure. Many of the things that
Microsoft patches against have known exploits "in the wild".

Anyway, stay safe.

I agree. What should the patch protect me against ??? All firewalls on every
computer (no not microsofts one-way-shit), Norton. Then a router with
hardwrae but software configurable firewall. All my ports even aren't there
when someone scans for them. They even are not saying they are not open. They
just seem to be not there from the big bad outside internet world.
And finally on a weekly base, several anti-spyware, adware, virusscanners
are running. Everything is checked almost instantly with Norton products.

But suppose, you have a running bussiness using WINDOWS-XP-PRO in a
workgroup and you'll get this kind of problems. It can bring down youre
bussiness completely. Having a XP-PRO server for sharing youre work with each
other....

I see it right in front of me:

"He Dirk, get my document it's ready for distribution"

"He, Earl, which document do you mean, there isn't one"

"Yes Earl, it's right on the server."

"No Dirk, it isn't"

"He Earl, I cannot find the spreadsheet of our last sales-analysis anymore..."

"He Dirk, I already said I cannot find youre document either"

Then the boss comes in:

Hi Jack, we seem to have problems.......

and finally:

Houston, we have a problem.....

Houston: We know, sorry guys, we are bussy calling Microsoft tech support,
but we suggest you crash first, Microsoft is looking into the problem. Could
last a few months or maybe half a year......

Yep, and now just recently Microsoft is making advertisement on TV here how
wonderfull the world is..... with Windows-XP.......

'ALL YOURE WISHES COME TRUE ....... WITH A WORLD RUNNING ON WINDOWS XP'

Antoine,

Not trying to sound like a Microsoftie (which I'm not), but it's not totally
Microsoft's fault. They have an open system, where anybody can develop software
to be run on Windows. I'll wager that, outside of corporate LANs, there's not 2
identical computers in the world. Everybody wants something different.

So, you do the best you can. Try and be as safe as possible, without the patch.

But I'm still a little irritated that Microsoft hasn't managed to plug THIS hole
yet. This issue has been known for months.
