Shared Borders File Management on Server

I cannot figure out where Frontpage is pulling the active borders file when loaded on my server. I am using a top border so my border file should be 'top.htm'. When I search on my server, all the locations of this file are not the current one working. I am baffled how it is working online. I can see on MY computer's harddrive that the file is located in "mydomain.com/_borders but on my server, this is not the case. ?????

Open the live site in FP, then Tools | Web Settings | Advanced, enable
viewing of hidden directories.

The shared borders top, left, bottom, right arein the hidden _borders folder --
it is a hidden file/folder -- within your web which is published along with the
rest of your site.

Shared borders and Include Pages are design time tools w/ the content (inside the <BODY> tags) of the Shared Border or Include page
"embedded" or included as html in your pages when you save any of the file(s) using them (or save the borders / include pages
themselves)
- you actually don't need them in a live web (unless you are going to edit the site online in FP)

FP converts your page(s) to a series of tables to include the Shared borders, (which are really just a special case of Include
pages)
But FP can not build those tables if either your shared border page content or main page content has illegal html or broken tag
pairs
- usually due to missing </body></html> tags, or unmatched table / cell tags (unclosed table / cell tags), or some other unclosed
html block element

If you can see them using File Preview in Browser they will publish in as part of your pages

If you can't see them using File Preview in Browser, it's because FP can not build the included content tables, so you need to
validate and correct your broken html

Ok... so is it possible to replace these files on the server?

The issue is this.... I have a client that screwed up their shared borders
on the servers (editing live) and it would be really nice if I could just
replace them from their backups. So can I upload just the shared border
files to replace them.... or is there a better way to do this????

Thanks

Yes, just open both a local copy and the live copy and copy and paste the
shared border (pages only, no hidden files) between them.

Ok... I went ahead and did this.... and the newer version that I uploaded
from my computer does not show up. It replaces the older top.htm file but
when I bring up the index.htm page on the server.... it is still the older
top.htm. I took off the shared boarders and then restored them on the page
thinking this might be the problem.... but alas.... it still did not use the
new top.htm file. So I am missing something somewhere... ideas????? In the
mean time I'll keep playing with it. :)

Thanks

Ok.. this is really strange.

When I replace the top.htm file with the newer version it imports fine. You
can even open up top.htm and it shows that it is the newer version that I've
imported... but when you go to put the top shared boarders on a page... it
reverts back. Then when you open up the top.htm the newer version is now
gone.

Open your problem web (w/ the bad shared borders) in FP
- make sure you have the correct shared borders (top, etc) applied and the _borders folder visible

Open your local web (w/ the good shared borders) in FP
- make sure you have the same shared borders applied and the _borders folder visible
- select the _borders folder from Folder List and Edit Copy
Switch to the problems web in FP and select the root folder, then Edit paste
- FP will prompt you about replacing files - OK
Run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks and FP should apply your newly copied shared border content pages to the problem site pages
