Shading cells

Color Blind

I am having problems shading cells in excel.
When I try to shade a cell or cells using either option below the cell stays
white and nothing happens.

1st: I try the Fill in Color button image on the formatting tool bar.
(Nothing)

2nd:I try to going to the other way by right clicking on cell, choosing
format cell, then pattern, then select color. (nothing)

Any assistance would be great.
 
you may want to check and see if you have conditional formatiing on the cell
