Check you computer for an I836 folder {likely either C:\windows\I386 or
C:\I386}. If you have the I386 folder, it contains the original installation
files for your version of Windows XP {like the Windows XP CD}. When asked
for the Windows XP CD, browse to your I386 folder and SFC /scannow will
start using that folder.

The new installation files for SP 2 are stored in an ServicePackFiles folder
in another I386 folder. Windows knows to go to ServicePackFiles/I386 to get
new SP 2 files.

I asked about this problem a couple of weeks ago, I experienced the same
exact scenario as you describe. I was told, I don't remember by whom, that
this was a bug of SP2 that has not been worked out yet. Any MVP's know what
we should do in the mean time? Thank you.
