I'm a bit confused as to what I ought to do when I run sfc /scannow. Thus
far, when it asks for the system CD, the CD whirrs up, and I click on "Exit",
but should I be going a bit further, and entering the product code first?
Because sfc ends rather unceremoniously, and because the events log (or
whatever it's called) only shows that it started and that a bit later it
finished, I'm not at all sure how I can tell it is actually working. (It
certainly seems to be trying to do something, according to the progress bar,
and its asking for the CD every now and then.) I've also got Norton products
protecting me from myself - so I don't really know what's happening!According
to Symantec, their protection overrides Windows File Protection.
Also, when sfc asks for the CD, it wants me to Retry (which is how I've
been using it so far), but clicking on its Information box, it tells me that
either my CD is the wrong one (it's the right one!) or that my drive is
faulty. I do have my suspicions about the drive, but was I wondering whether
this is just an XP quirk and whether everyone else has this message. When
isfc continues after Retry, does this mean it was successful, or that it gave
up on a particular file?
I'll be grateful for any ideas, thanks in advance.
