Several issues with search

First off, I have Googled, but I wasn't able to pin anything down. Running
XP Pro with SP2 and all subsequent fixes. Box is an FX-55 with 2GB and
2x75GB Raptor drives in a RAID0 array and a separate 300GB Caviar - all are
SATA.

Problem One
------------------
Whenever search is run (and even after the search is concluded) explorer.exe
continues to munch 100% clock cycles. This makes working with the search
results nigh on impossible. I have carried out all essential maintenance
(virus scan, spyware scan and defragged). Only when the search window is
closed does the level drop back to normal.

Problem Two
---------------
If I search, then decide that I wish to search another drive, or for another
item, about 90% of the time I have to close the window and reopen it because
the search button is greyed out and unavailable. I'm sure this is not a
normal state of affairs and I cannot recall when I first noticed its
occurrence.

Problem Three
------------------
Every so often when I search there is a balloon at the side of the window
(where the companion should be) with an obtuse message (an error has
occurred - and yes, that's it verbatim).

If anyone has any ideas, then please share them. I have searched Kelly's
site for fixes, but I cannot find anything to help - nor on Doug's.

Thanks

Hate to reply to my own posts, but graphical representation of issues one
and two can be found here http://www.craigy34.eclipse.co.uk/. I will upload
an image of the third problem the next time it occurs.

In Miss Perspicacia Tick <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:
<snip>

Let me first state that I have no idea why but rather a question or two
actually. The first is do you really need the search assistant? The second
is does this problem occur when you use the classic style search? If the
answer is no to both there's a work-around though not a solution.

I don't have an answer either (sorry) but a good workaround. Much as I
enjoy XP, I think its search capability sucks. I always install the
free Agent Ransack on all my Windows boxen and never use built-in
search. Here's the link for Agent Ransack:

Hope you figure out the root cause.
