Ben

I've have a small LAN, 2 servers. The backup Controller
running advanced server 2000, Windows VPN and Terminal
Service works fine until I assing it a global IP address.
within minuites the NIC starts broadcasting packets and
brings down the network. None of the pc's or other server
can get out to the internet. If I unplug the Server from
the switch everything is fine. I've tried everything I
know in conjuction with my ISP to resolve to no avail. No
viruses detected, Event viewer is not showing any errors.
It does have a static IP. If anyone can help or has seen
this I would appreciate some direction.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

What are the broadcast packets the server is sending? ICMP packets? Arp
packets? DNS queries? ??
It sounds like a virus, I would recommend that you insure you have the
latest updates for your anti virus software and scan the box again. Another
possibility is that the NIC is bad - have you swapped it out?

Thanks for your response Mark.

I'm not sure what type packets are being broadcasts. I
don't have nor can afford a network analyzer just yet.
The NIC's are integrated and I did have the system board
replaced by the vendor.

I did get the blaster virus about a month ago. I cleaned
and installed MS recommended patches and hotfixes. Do you
think the virus is still resident and not being detected
by Virus Scan? And can I check something in the registry
to confirm?

Thanks again,

Ben

There is a free network analyzer that comes with Windows 2000 server. To install Network Monitor go to Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Add Remove
Windows Components>Management and Monitoring Tools and choose the option for Network Monitor Tools. This will require the Windows 2000 server CD.

Also, what do you mean by global IP address. I'm not familiar with this term.

Thank you,
