setup windows xp pro

I've been trying to set up windows xp on my computer for over 24 hours and I
would really appreciate any help you would offer. I recently was given this
computer with a trojan on it so I erased the hard drive and now I'm trying to
install xp on it it is a compaq armada 1700 laptop computer. My problem is
everytime I start to setup xo on the computer is that I get to a blue screen
that tells me "Setup is starting Windows" and then it seems to freeze and
won't go any farther.
 
To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. Setup inspects
your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to install the setup
and driver files. When the Windows XP Professional screen appears, press
ENTER to set up Windows XP Professional.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at
setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller
detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be
prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your
drive controller in drive "A")

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows XP Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

The problem is that I never reach the windows xp screen I only get to the
blue screen that i mentioned earlier

Sounds like you're not booting the CD-Rom. Possibly set the boot order in
cmos setup to CD-Rom first in boot sequence. Also look for the keystroke (if
necessary) at POST to force boot from CD-Rom drive or check your mobo/pc
manual for instructions.

What pc make and model? What bios version? If Dell then post service tag #

The Compaq Armada 1700 is an exceedingly old computer, and, even if
purchased with the maximum CPU speed (300 MHz) and amount of RAM (160
Mb) available at the time it was manufactured, would just barely meet
WinXP's absolute minimum system requirements. It was, after all,
designed for Windows 95, with a standard CPU of 233 MHz and only 32 Mb
of RAM. Additionally, there's much more to supporting WinXP than CPU
speed and the amount of RAM

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

FYI, Dave, the Compaq Armada 1700 was designed for Win95, and so may
not be capable of booting from the CD.
