Setup was unable to load the master information file

Whenever I attempt to add/remove a windows component via the 'add or remove
programs facility in the control panel, I get the following error message;

"Setup was unable to load the master information file"

How can I overcome this in order to add or remove windows components?

Hi Alex,

This error occurs if the file sysoc.inf is missing from C:\Windows\Inf folder. Extracting a new copy of this file from XP CD-ROM should help. You may use MSCONFIG to extract the file. It is possible that some other INFs are missing.
