For those of you who use XNews, you may have had difficulty getting the
settings for default newsreader to stick in Windows XP:

AFTER backing up your registry, AND editing the path information within to
reflect the location of XNews, right-click install the attached .REG file

I can't say whether this works for other versions of Windows

Do you see "binaries" in any of the groups you posted to?

Just post the text of the reg file, or link to it from a server or binary
groups.

You also exported the keys for OE's paths, but they are encoded as
hex. Those keys shouldn't be necessary, and might even cause harm;
I'm not familiar enough with OE's paths to know if they might change
from one machine to the next.

Where are these people who are having trouble making Xnews the
default newsreader, and why aren't they asking about it in
news.software.readers?

It wasn't in response to a current problem, but rather an occasional
recurrence - check your archives over a period and you'll spot it here
and there. I was re-installing to a new HD, experienced it yet again, so
decided to share it for those who might have given up

I wasn't trying to get up anyone's nose. See my reply to sittingduck. I
am now somewhat wiser. I believed that warnings about backing up the
registry were sufficient netiquette in the case of text attachments. Now
I know better
