Setting up secure wifi network

Hi all, i'm running a dlink wireless router through win xp
sp2. I'm trying to setup a secure wireless network,
currently i'm just using the default unsecure connection.
I have run through the setup proceedure repeatedly and my
network i create i can never get it to show up as a
connectable network. Any suggestions are welcome.
