Setting up networking & complete access 50 miles apart

I'm using a 56k Modem:
I was offered a job working a salvage yard computer for a
guy who lives 50 miles from me. I'd like to stay right
here and have complete access to his computer 50 miles
away from me. I've heard a lot about networking. I know
very little about networking. Do we both need to put a
networking card in the expansion slot on both of our pc's?
Or, can I have complete access to his files, programs and
etc... on his computer VIA the Internet without a
networking card and not have to worry about some outsider
tapping in on our business VIA computer hacking and etc...?
I don't know what to look under in networking to find out
what my options are. Will you explain this to me?
Regards,
Travis Glenn

John;
Thanks for the info. This pc anywhere sounds so simple
that I should have thought of it. I can't even be called
Simple Simon.
This is good advice and I'm going for it.

I'm glad I could help, it works great for dial up too. You
can set up the modem on the other end to pick up the phone
after X ammount of rings (so long as the other computer is
on of course) You'll do just fine ;)
