I'm trying to set up a network w/2 machines both on
Windows XP Home. Every time I try to use the wizard on
my desk top, I got partially through it before I encouter
an error. . .
"Spooler SubSystem App has encountered an error and needs
to close" --- once it does this, the wizard cannot
complete the setup.

All I can find on help is the suggestion to make a
register change which sounds scary to me.

FYI - a few months ago I did have a spooler problem with
this machine with a particular printer that crashed --
however, it hasn't been any issue in ages.

Any suggestions???????? Thanks in advance.

Greetings Sheryl,

You're not the only one with this problem but there is a workaround.
Usually, these errors occur due to printer even though your printer is
functioning properly. Open the Command Prompt and stop the Spooler Service
before running the Network Setup Wizard. Here's what you do:

1. Open the Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type "net stop spooler". Then press ENTER.
3. Run the Network Setup Wizard again to complete the network setup.
4. After you are finished, then restart the spooler service. To restart the
spooler service, open the Command Prompt and type "net start spooler". Then
press ENTER.

Thanks for your response Eric. I just tried it and
unfortunatly, I still am not successful with the wizard.
The bummer is this time, the error message doesn't give
me any clues as to what the error is. The wizard just
ends with a 'Cannot complete network wizard. . . config
manually or with different settings' -- Any suggestion on
what I can do next?

THANKS very much for your help.

It is really hard to say, Sheryl. How are your machines configured on the
network and what steps have you taken when running the Network Setup Wizard?

Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled. If you installed a third party
firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Norton Internet Security, make sure
it isn't blocking access between the machines. Ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is
enabled on all machines. Details here.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Okay - I'm making progress. I disabled Norton's and was
able to get through the wizard. From my laptop, I am now
able to access my desktop! Yipee! HOWEVER, from my
desktop, when I try to access the work group, it tells me
I don't have access - that I may not have permission.

You're brief tips so far have really helped . . . any
additional ones to add . . .

Thanks!

Sheryl
