I've been trying to share files between two computers using an ethernet cable
only, no internet connection. I've heard that it can be done, but I don't
have the first clue as to where to start. Any help would be greatly
appretiated.

If you are only using two PCs, then you must be using a cross-over Ethernet
cable and assign all the IP parameters by hand (IP address / subnet mask etc...)

If you want to use the standard Ethernet cable, which are straight-thru
cables, you need a hub or switch. If you also want to have high-speed
Internet access, you need a router.
