See the latest numbering discussion I've seen, especially post #4 which
contains Dave Rado's concise instructions for setting up heading numbering.

I followed the cookbook recipe from post #4 for heading 1 as follows:
1) On the "indents and spacing" tab for paragraph properties, I set
alignment to right.
2) On the "outline numbered" tab for numbering properties I selected
the last option. (Now heading 1 is numbered in sequence
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, ..., etc.)
3) On the customize dialog for outline numbering I set the number
position to "right aligned at 13.4cm." (13.4cm being my outside margin)
With the above constraints, Word using its demented logic, has
added a 13.4 cm "first line" indentation to the paragraph properties
of heading 1. The side effect of the first line indentation is that
as soon as I type a character, the first line is completely filled, and
Word starts on the second line. So now, if I hit a space before
typing my chapter title, I get my two line chapter heading right justified
on the outside margin of the document (as sketched in the ASCII
diagram above).
(Oh by the way Charles, before you get the image that I'm one of the
curmudgeons sitting in the balcony berating all the other muppets,
thankyou for the link to the article -- I am grateful.)
