Setting up a server using XP

All along I have been told that XP Pro is virtually
Windows 2000 Pro which was NT 4. If this is wrong, then
I know where my problem lies.

However, I was hoping to set up a computer as a file
server in our small mid-market business. We have NOTHING
currently, and are hoping to make small steps up the
networking ladder.

Can XP be set up as a domain server or even a full
service file server?
 
There is limit for 10 concurrent connections. That's because Microsoft wants
you to use Win2000 or Win 2003 Server products if there are many users. Win
XP Pro is intended for workstation use only. If you don't want buy windows
server licenses, you can install linux server and use Samba. That way you'll
get almost free file server for windows users.

Windows NT Workstation, 2000 Pro, and XP Pro are all client operating
systems. None of them can be set up as a domain server.

For a domain server, you need Windows NT Server, Windows 2000 Server,
or Windows Server 2003.

You can use XP as a small file server for up to 10 simultaneous connections.
Depending upon your business need you may want to consider Small Business
Server.
