setting IR mode for serial port

Hi

On my chaintech motherboard i can use the UART2 mode to select an operating
mode fort he second serial port, an option being IR mode.

What does this actually do, the board doesnt appear to have an Infrared
sensor.

routes serial signal to headers, near as i can tell based on a few of my
motherboards, ir needs mudulation, but when using regular serial it's just
a waste of power to leave the modulator running, n uther stuff.
