Setting File and Buffers

I have an older dos accounting app that requires some
custom settings for files and buffers. The XP Home edition
machine does not appear to read the config.sys file
created for this purpose. Is there another location to set
these values?

Copy c:\Windows\System32\Config.nt and C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt
files to the directory of your DOS program. Edit them for the
configuration you need. Save them with a different name, open the
Properties dialog for the DOS program, select the Program tab, and click
on the 'Advanced' button.

Put in the specialized Config and Autoexec filenames you created and XP
will run the program in the customized environment.
