Services delay?

G

Guest

Just got a strange boot problem in XP Pro SP1
Symptoms: Boots fine, and loads desktop - but not all functions/services
About half of the services are not loaded, like Application Management, Windows Audio and ALG etc. Also, Norton AV displays a red cross. I can not browse any files in explorer, I just get a flashlight

But suddenly, after like 10-15 minutes, everything starts to work again. All services loads up, NAV loads autoprotect, and everything is fine. Also, the icons in systray appears
In eventlog, a lot of error entries (~20) are added at the same time (when everything starts to work again), and many of the errors are "didn't start in a timely fashion" and similar

After that, everything is fine, no problems at all

The machine is a dual Xeon 3.06 w 2 Gb RAM. Scanned for viruses with latest defs, checked for spyware etc. No strange registry entries in Run, nothing odd in Msconfig. All services are default (startup type and account). I do not have a restore point to get back to

Anyone knows anything about this? I appriciate any help...!

Hi

Have you checked the default 'Startup type' for those Services:

Start>Run - then type in "services.msc" - without the quotes. Then go to Help>Help Topics - expand Services>Concepts>Default settings for Services.

If Norton AV runs at startup, what happens if you disable it?

Hi,

Yes, everything is default according to the help file... And I tried to uninstall NAV, but no difference. And boot logging doesn't give that much info. Maybe Bootvis can show what's going on? The OS is apparently waiting for something, and then it is working fine again.

Also, during the delay, I cannot start/stop/change any services. As soon as I hit Ok in that window, that instance of the console freezes - but wakes up after the delay.

I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).

2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Hi

It seems as though either a process or program is trying to load/run at startup - Bootvis may give some idea of what is happening. Have you got any anomalous Processes running via Task Manager after your PC has booted?

Isn't System Restore creating any points at all? Can you manually create an SR Point and then use that Point to revert your PC?

W

Will Denny

Hi

The two problems 'could' be related. System Restore needs the Task Scheduler Service to be running. If that Service isn't running, then SR can't create any Points. If that Service is one of those not loading at Startup, then SR may not realise that it does start after 10-15 mins.

Most error msgs just leads nowhere - didn't start in a timely fashion, and the link provides no extra help. On some msgs it says that the computer may lack free resources etc

I am not next to the machine until later today, but I will post a couple of error msgs later.

I have no suspicious processes running. And about the SR - at the time the computer worked, the SR was not running (I had it turned off... great). So I have no points to revert to

But I can create new points - after the 15 min delay. During the delay, those things won't work

Here are some of the error msgs from the system event log:
The log fills with this the same second as the system wakes up after the delay, approx. 11 minutes after the last event recorded, so the delay is 11 minutes.

BTW, When performing a clean boot with Msconfig, the delay still occurs.

I had a similar delay except that it was 1 minute made up of two 30 second
segments. In the Event viewer I found a grouping of 3 error notices.
The 1st two were under the Service Control Heading, the last DCOM.
The 1st error was shown as a "timeout (30secs) waiting for a transaction
response from the SHELL HW Detection service, Event 7011
The 2nd error was AUDIOSRV service, also 30secs. Also Event 7011
The 3rd error was DCOM. Event 10005
Now the sad thing is I can't provide you with all the steps I went through
to eliminate these errors except that restoring PNP was one solution.
I also set both services to manual.
In any event (no pun intended;) you'll have to look in Event Viewer for
error notices and work from there.
BTW, I had this problem for months until I resolved it a couple of days ago!

General comment on Event 7011 -source: http://66.200.20.8/evtbkstart.asp?Name=Demo&Email=Demo&key=N1251D9-U10-4269-RLFEF-JJFG-16
A boot-start or system-start driver is dependent on another driver or service to start. These drivers should depend only on a group. Ask the person with administrative rights on your computer to change the dependency to refer to a group rather than another driver.

Article 811428 only deals with two Events but it seems possible that they may resolve others.

Please let the group know any reduction in reported Events.

Gerry,

I saw this too, but when I asked me (being admin on this computer) to change the dependency, I only got a "Duh" as an answer ;-)

Honestly, I don't know how to do that... So about an hour ago I started to reinstall, after failing to make an in-place upgrade. It's not fun, but sometimes it's the best solution maybe. Too bad I didn't found out exactly what went wrong.

Anyway, thanks a lot for helping! I really appreciate it!

Cheers,

Robert

Ok, I gave up. I am reinstalling completely, after a failed in-place upgrade... I just wanted to thank you for all your help anyway!
