Service Pack 3

I am using WinXP on a P4, 2.2 machine, Office XP, with Norton Internet
Security. (All software is completely up to date)

I downloaded Microsoft's Office XP 2002 Service Pack 3. But, since doing so,
in Outlook, when I indicate to Norton that an email is spam, a message pops
up indicating that a program is attempting to access my address book, and
what do I want to do: Allow or cancel. And it has a drop-down menu to allow
the access to the address book for one minute, two minutes, etc. When I
click "OK" on the message to allow access, the spam is moved to Norton Spam
Folder. BUT, then I cannot click on any of the functions of the Outlook XP
2002 task bar; and the only way I can shut down Outlook is to us
ctrl-alt-delete, and end task. (Before downloading SP-3, this did not
happen)

I wrote to Norton, and I received the reply "this issue is not a common
issue Symantec has ever faced." They suggested I contact Microsoft.

Is anyone in this group running into this problem? I can't imagine it's
unique to me.

Thank you for your input.

Ernie

Look over on the Outlook Installation group for the recent posting "Office
XP Outlook 2002 SP3 Update" and the fifth posting in the thread. It states
Microsoft acknowledge there is a problem.

This problem with Office XP SP3 has been reported numrous times in Office
and Outlook newsgroups over the last few days. I reported it on 3/10/2004
because a similar behavior started happening right after I installed SP3. I
use Outlook 2002 and McAfee VirusScan (online subsrciption so it's updated
automatically every time I boot-up).

In my case I get 3-5 of the same popup boxes EVERY time I RECEIVE an email
(several hundred each day). The issue has been pointed out at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002sp3.htm#problems and so far I've seen
no real help (IMHO) from Microsoft. SP3 evidently fixes lots of things which
are also fixed in Office XP 2003/Outlook 2003. If one installs SP3 with
Office XP 2002/Outlook 2002, the security settings find COM add-ins, VBAs
and published forms that you have on your PC and causes the popup to appear
thinking that at least one of those programs is a potential virus. The
common recommendation is to update these programs to fix the problem.
Microsoft offers no help in trying to determine which of these programs
needs updating.

I thought McAfee VirusScan might be the offender and turned it off for
several hours. Still got the popups.

This has been an extremely poor roll-out by Microsoft.

Well documented by many posts in this group.
You may be able to get around the problem by either disabling Word as your
e-mail editor or updating some of your add-ins, especially virus scanners.
See the following article for more
information:

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002sp3.htm#problems

There's also an MSKB article which explains the problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838871

And Norton is most certainly well aware of it.
none of the above work...on my machine. let's hope MS gets off
their asses quickly.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses.

At least now I know what's wrong.

if you can identify which program is causing it - usually an addin or
program that does something to an incoming or outgoing email message, but it
could be a word addin that loads when you compose a message using wordmail -
post back so others know.

Anti-spam programs are the most common culprit but programs such as Hotbar
or smiley central which add icons to email will trigger the warning too.

Here's what Cloudmark (Spamnet author) says at
http://cloudmark.com/support/spamnet/kb/article.php?id=74:
"Cloudmark is working with Microsoft to find a solution to this problem and
will post a solution to the knowledgebase section of the Cloudmark Support
website. The current workaround is to revert to a previous Windows Restore
Point before the SP3 update. Windows generally creates Restore Point each
day or before new installations. The Restore feature is located in the
Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System Restore (located on the
left pane).
If a Restore Point is not available, uninstall Office and then reinstall
without installing SP3.

You may also workaround this issue by selecting 10 minutes and selecting Yes
when the security warning appears."

Yeah, yeah, I read that too.

I can only speak for myself, but I have no interest in
reinstaling anything...especially uninstalling SP3&
Office...on;ly to spend more time reinstalling them. I think
not.

Just for the record, I do NOT use Word for composing email.
However I do use the IncrediMail plug-in and Mailfrontier's
Matador Anti-Spam plug-in.

In my case I am using Cloudmark SpamNet and Office XP (professional)
SP3. I am tempted to try simply upgrading to Office 2003 (SpamNet
list Office 2003 as supported on their web site) and see if that takes
care of it.

Has anyone tried this?

I have found a work around for the problem with Norton antispam go into
configure and delete all the entry's in the allowed list you will find that
the program will work and not lock up.

Actually, things are starting to look more positive. Cloudmark has
come out with a new build for SpamNet which you can install over your
old copy. I would tend to think that other companies are coming up
with similar stuff.

Check it out:

IncrediMail have a fix for the SP3 problem in build 1431.
