I just did a clean install of xp home on a new hard drive.
I then did the windows update and installed sp 2.
Now I can only boot in safe mode.

What happened ?

Have you tried repairing the OS using your win xp disk? SP2 might have
replaced some of the system files that requires you to boot normally. Reboot
then press F12, force the machine to boot to the C drive, it might ask you on
how to boot make sure you choose "boot normally."
