There are some functions within XP Home Edition that have not been working
properly and I suspec that I have some corrupt files. Can Service Pack 2 be
reinstalled or does it have to be uninstalled first? Also, are there any
issues I need to be aware of before proceeding? Thanks!

You can just reinstall it, but you should shut down all applications and
real-time virus scanners or malware scanners.

Also, after the installation you would need to roll-up the 100+ patches that
have been released post SP2.

Lastly, what "some functions" are you referring to and why do you think an
SP2 reinstall will solve the problem?

Thanks for your prompt response!

I have noticed the following issues:

1. When I try "System Information" I get no response.
2. When I try to "Search for files and folders" I get a blank window.
2. When I try to go to Windows Update I get a blank screen. Automatic
updates seem to be working OK, though. I have IE 7 and it seems to be
working OK, except for Windows Update.

I am not really sure whether a SP2 reinstall will fix it, but I am getting
frustrated and am about ready to try anything. There is 1GB of memory
installed, so it is not a memory issue.

I plan on trying to run the System File Checker too. Maybe I should do that
first?

Yes. Run SFC first.

Good luck

What you should do first is to insure that there is no malware on your
system since the symptoms you describe can be caused by them.
In addition, it is folly to install SP2 on a system which is not known to be
free of malware.
