I have a similar problem. Since installing SP2 to XP Home, Windows explorer
is not only very slow, it freezes up on me when I try to select an item near
the bottom of the window. This is very frustrating since I use explorer a
lot.

These discussion groups are nice, but not very efficient. It would be nice
to find a user friendly list of known problems and expected resolution dates.
It's not like Microsoft didn't expect problems with such a major overhaul.

Jerry,

I suspect we won't see that any time soon. The reason is that
Microsoft doesn't work that way. My subjective impression is
that, once a defect is recognized and also determined that a
large enough number of users is affected (particularly in big
companies that exert pressure), then such a defect is rectified
quite soon, within very few weeks.

Thus a list, like the one you asked for, makes little sense. The
problem wouldn't be waiting for the list to be processed, the
problem would be to get any defect on the list in the first
place.

What we can do is help ourselves, particularly with finding
solutions, if the problem is not in Windows, and workarounds if
it is. This is what these newsgroups are for, and I think the
are helpful for many. And many more read them without ever
writing.

Jerry,

I have exactly the same problem with Windows Explorer after installing
SP2! Explorer crashes EVERY time I try to do anything at all! It also takes
FOREVER to load: before SP2- 1 or 2 seconds, AFTER SP2 - 40-60 seconds.
This has literallly made my computer un-usable. I am thinking about
reverting back to using an Abacus, which would be faster!
My temporary workaround is to use PowerDesk (www.ontrack.com) which is now
also loading VERY slowly, but at least is not crashing all of the time.
PowerDesk is what Windows Explorer SHOULD have been all along.
I am using a SONY VAIO notebook with their latest BIOS installed. They
blame Microsoft for this problem. Their always pathetic Tech Support
suggested that I reformat my HDD (thus losing all of my settings and
configurations) and re-install their lame OEM version of XP Home, then
re-install all of my programs, blah, blah, blah. This total waste of about
one WORKING WEEK OF MAN-HOURS is their automatic solution for EVERY problem.
There must be more victims like us out there. I find it curious that
nobody has responded constructively to your (and My) problem. Maybe this
post will create some interest?

Guapo,

the most likely cause is third party software, particularly
multimedia codecs, very particularly video codecs. Do you have
any multimedia software installed, for example, DivX related
stuff?

If so, then Microsoft can only very indirectly be blamed, for
opening Windows to third party software. I do not quite see,
however, how Windows could be popular without that.
