Service Pack 2 does not install

I upgraded a W2K computer to XP. Then I started to run
Windows Update from the Start menu in XP until I got to
the point where Windows Update tries to download and
install Service Pack but it does not succeed. The MBSA
says that there are like 20+ critical updates to install
but since the SP2 does not install I can not get rid of
the red crosses in MBSA. Did I do something wrong or is it
that SP2 XP is pretty bad?

I would suggest performing the following maintenance prior to
installing SP2:

Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP

How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP

Then visit the following website to download SP2 directly:

Windows XP SP2 - Direct Download

After installing SP2, defrag your drive:

SP-2 usually installs fine on a properly prepared and maintained
computer.

Ignore MBSA since SP-2 will take care of those items and they are not
necessary if you are installing SP-2.

Also see the Service Pack Installation Checklist to assist you
installing SP-2:
