I work with Windows 2000 Server and have around 200 user
accounts. The server seems to be stuck for few minutes
while assigning permissions / security for the home
folders. (while working in Windows Explorer) This problem
incresed when I keep adding user accounts and setting
permissions. Kindly advise what could be wrong!!
Elizabeth,
I just experienced something similar. I have a folder
shared on a Server that contains a ton of folders
underneath it. I had to change permissions to the Local
Security Group ( which contains Global Security Groups
which actually contain all of the user account
objects ). It did take about 45 seconds before it was
finished. My point: this is normal behavior.
Now, what does "a few minutes" mean? Is it really just
45 seconds ( actually timed mine; after about 15 seconds
I started counting and reached 27 )?
How have you shared the folders? Did you manually create
each user's Home Folder? or did you let the Operating
System do it? Are you sitting at the Server itself and
making the change or are you sitting at your computer
logged in as a user account with the proper permissions
doing this over the network?
Has this happened before? or are you doing something of
this nature for the first time?
HTH,
Cary
