Server Permissions Administration

I personally con't care for the web based permissions interfaces for FP.

Is there a way to force FrontPage to use the windows based permissions
interfaces instead of the web admin interfaces?

Also, what determines which is launched when using the
Tools-->Server-->Permissions menu?

Thanks

I think this depends on if the host has set it to allow you to do this.

What do you mean by "web based permissions interfaces for FP" - do you mean
such things like Cpanel (a commonly used control panel on linux hosting)
where you can set folder permissions, load/uninstall the FP server
extensions etc.??

Thanks for the reply.

I'm referring to the FPSE Web Permissions interfaces (not to be confused
with IIS manager).

This is used specificly for assigning users to varous levels of access to
the FP web that you are working with. In most 3rd party hosting
environments, this isn't accessable to the hosting customer.

In our environment, we have our own server, and, setup webs and sub webs.
To assign which user can author in which web or sub web, we use Active
Directory accounts. These accounts are assigned to a web using FP's server
permissions interfaces which appear to come in two flavors, windows and web.
Some webs I've worked with display the web based interfaces, some the windows
interfaces. I can't seem to figure out what makes that determination.

Hope that helps to clarify.

Thanks

On our Windows server, we use NTFS permissions on files and folders.

Hi Bernadou,

There is no way to accomplish that as the permission deal with web author etc and not NTFS file permissions.

Ok, I'm not being clear, but I truly appreciate everyone's responses. Let me
try again...

I'm familiar with AD, NTFS and FPSE and how they tie together. I'm not
really asking a question specificly about them. I'm trying to understand
something more simple and specific.

When running an instance of the FP client, and, you have server based web
open, and, from the main toolbar you click: Tools-->Server-->Permissions one
of three things seems to happen.

1. Nothing because the option is inactive due to permissions on the server
(I think)
2. It opens a FrontPage Permissions interface that is a Win32 dialog box
with three tabs on it (Users, Groups, Computers).
3. It opens a FrontPage Administration web application and prompts you for
credentials.

My confusion centers around why/how options #2 and #3 can be controlled. I
only want to use option #2 to assign my users to their respective webs. I've
done it both ways but I really don't like the web interface because it
doesn't allow me to see all the users on a domain. The Win32 interface does.

I hope this helps to clear up any confusion.

Thanks
B
