Server object remains after demotion

Hi All

I hope someone can tell me if I'm about to press the right button :)

I have 3 domain controllers - 2 running 2003 Server (1 of which holds
the FSMO roles) and 1 running 2000 Server. I want to demote the 2000
Server machine but leave it active as a member server in the domain.

I have run dcpromo on the 2000 Server machine and demoted it and
everything appeared to work OK. However, the server name is still
appearing in the Server section of my site in the AD Sites and Services
snap-in but it does NOT contain an NTDS Settings object.

I've seen plenty of articles about how to remove a domain controller
after dcpromo has failed and left the NTDS Setting object intact. But
I've not yet found anything about what to do if this object has been
removed.

I *think* I can now get away with simply deleting the demoted server
entry from the Sites and Services snap-in as long as the NTDS object
has already been deleted. Is this correct? Should I check anything
before going ahead with this?

If I do delete the empty server object, will the server still remain in
the domain?

Cheers, Jim

This is normal behavior, you have to remove it manually.

Just remove it from ADSS. Make sure that you have one GC per site and that
all FSMO roles are available in other servers.
